Brazilnuts

The Brazil nut is a nut that appeals to one’s imagination and grows in South America, in the vast Amazon region, in the west surrounded by Peru, Bolivia and Colombia, near the Andes mountain range that stretches from south to north. The Brazil nuts are growing in trees which can reach a height of 60 meter. To harvest them, the natives wait until the big green capsules fall from the trees. the nuts cannot be picked and gathered by the people. So picking them up, often digging them out of the soft river is the most effective way. With large, dangerous looking machetes, they cleave the capsule in half and remove the seeds: the Brazil nuts in their hard ribbed shells. Then the Brazil nuts are dried and picked up by a ship that drifts down the Amazon River.

Brazils are predominantly used as snacks and in mixes. They are often used in confectionary such as chocolates and in bakery items such as brownies.
